‘Tis The Season

‘Tis The Season

Summer is here and so are all the conferences.  In the last few weeks there have been three different conferences lab members have participated in.  The first meeting, the Canada Gairdner Symposium, occurred here at the University of Alberta and included speakers from around the world.  Sadly Nobel Prize laureate Gunter Blobel was unable to attend due to illness.  All three lab members, Judit, Azra and Biplab, presented poster at this symposium.

On May 30th the Alberta Nano Symposium was held in Banff, Alberta.  Azra attending this meeting and blew the minds off all those physicists with her abilities to manipulate yeast; once again proving the awesome powers of yeast genetics.  Banff is one of the most beautiful places to host a meeting and Azra jumped at the chance to visit the mountains, even if she did have to present a poster at the meeting.  The poster Azra presented was so great she was awarded a prize for it.

And the most important meeting of this summer was RiboWest, hosted by our fearless leader Ben along with George Owttrim (Dept. of Biological Sciences)!  RiboWest happened on June 8-9, 2015 here in Edmonton.  The keynote speakers for RiboWest were:  Dr. Ron Breaker from Yale University and Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Dr. Roy Parker from University of Colorado, Boulder and Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and Dr. Daniel Lafontaine from Unversite de Sherbrooke.  Biplab presented a poster and Azra was selected to give a talk.  We charged Ben with favoritism but he swears he was not in charge of selecting the student talks.  Azra was awarded a prize for best oral presentation at RiboWest.

Some pictures should be surfacing soon of this fun meeting.  However, there is no photographic evidence of the really fun times that started in the evenings after the talks.  It is reported that Biplab tried his hardest to get Judit drunk, it is unclear if he ever succeeded…  Either because no one can remember what happened after the tequila shots started or because no one is admitting what happened.
